Open to allIt's unclear why the NRF rejected Shein's membership application, but according to one of the people familiar, someone with sway is strongly against the company's admittance. The NRF's board has a leadership team and an executive committee. An NRF membership application form that can be found online states: "Companies principally engaged in retailing are eligible for membership in the Federation." Two of the board members said they weren't aware of any instances where the NRF denied a retailer membership. "I don't think they are in the business of turning anyone down," one of the board members told CNBC.

Last week at the Venice Biennale, the milliner Giuliana Longo wore gold earrings in the shape of hats as she showed off a hat sculpture made of natural agave. Ms. Longo, who has worked as a milliner since 1969, said through a translator that she fell in love with hats because “if you wear a hat, you become a different person.”Dotted with 500 “pebbles,” each hand stitched to the fabric, the hat was in fact not just a hat but a tribute to a shoe: the Tod’s Gommino driving shoe, a hand-stitched loafer in leather or suede with rubber pebbles on the bottom and back that make it look a bit like a soft, chic cleat. Tod’s, the Italian leather goods and fashion company, had assembled 11 Venetian craftsmen to interpret the Gommino using their own tools and artistry. The works, created by Venetian glassblowers, mask makers and other artisans, were exhibited at a cocktail party on April 19. At an airy warehouse across the canal from the Italian Pavilion, craftspeople stood proudly by their work.

“Queen!”It was a Friday night in January, and Snoop Dogg had just rolled into a cocktail party hosted by Donna Langley, NBCUniversal’s chief content officer and studios chairwoman. His shouted greeting, paired with a jaunty deferential dance, seemed to leave her a bit embarrassed. “We’re here to celebrate filmmakers and films,” Langley told the room a few minutes later. Like it or not, this moment in Hollywood history is very much about her. Nolan started his acceptance speech for best director by saying, “Donna Langley — thank you for seeing the potential in this.”

A top adviser to Donald Trump 's 2024 presidential campaign has a message for some of the wealthiest Republican donors in the country: Don't take the former president's divisive rhetoric too seriously. Wiles' message to donors, to just ignore Trump's hyperbolic rhetoric, is reminiscent of the spin from White House staff while Trump was president. In Palm Beach Tuesday, Wiles' pitch appeared to work, at least on some of the participants. Neither Wiles nor a Trump campaign spokesperson returned requests for comment before publication. A spokeswoman for the Haley campaign said the events this week in New York raised over $1.5 million.

Here's a new trend to learn for your next cocktail party: Bookshelf wealth. Bookshelf wealth — an interior design trend profiled in House Beautiful, Better Homes & Gardens, and now The New York Times — rejects a perfectly staged, hyper-curated room in favor of a look that's a little more messy and quirky. Advertisement"What separates this from other interior design styles is that these homes look cozy and lived in," says interior design creator Kailee Blalock in a TikTok video posted by @houseofhive. A particular interior design aesthetic that can only be achieved through not trying too hard and displaying items that are meaningful might sound a bit oxymoronic. "Beyond Utopia" attracted interest at Sundance from streamers like Amazon's Prime Video and Netflix. Interest peaked four years ago at the Sundance Film Festival, fueled by Amazon and Netflix, which paid a record $10 million for the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez doc "Knock Down the House." In the crime realm, WME advised, Netflix was seeking films based on big, well-known cases and scams like "Dahmer" and "Tinder Swindler." Filmmakers point to streamers' self-censorship and 'cold feet' over sensitive topicsSome filmmakers said there are still champions at the streamers for documentaries that push the envelope. "Beyond Utopia" is among a number of recent films that have been snubbed by the big streamers, despite winning awards and buzz.

“Everybody back up!” someone called to a crowd of people surrounding the model and actress Christie Brinkley, who was standing near a neatly trimmed lawn on a sunny and hot Saturday afternoon. Ms. Brinkley had just arrived at Polo Hamptons, an annual cocktail party and polo match held over two weekends in July on the sprawling, private Fishel estate in Bridgehampton, N.Y.“I’ve always gone to polo throughout my time out here because it is so East Coast,” said Ms. Brinkley, 69, as she sipped from a small bottle of rosé from Bellissima, her wine label, which people were also drinking nearby. “And there are usually some cute polo players.”The event on Saturday, which drew more than 900 people, was organized by Social Life magazine, a lifestyle publication based in the Hamptons that was celebrating its 20th anniversary. The afternoon attracted a crowd that included Jean Shafiroff, the philanthropist, Lizzie Asher, the president of Macchu Pisco, a spirits company, and Maria and Kenneth Fishel, who own the estate.

London CNN —When The National Portrait Gallery opened its doors to the public in London on Thursday, it was the first time in three years it has done so. The National Portrait Gallery was officially opened by Catherine, Princess of Wales, seen standing in front of Joshua Reynolds’ Portrait of Mai (Omai). Why would the National Portrait Gallery commit to taking this work they wouldn’t see until it’s finished, 90% of which is created by non-artists? What did she do?” Haworth told the National Portrait Gallery about the figure. Some art critics have been scathing of the gallery’s rework, with Jonathan Jones at the Guardian dubbing it “the same old cocktail party.” His review begins: “The National Portrait Gallery has been closed for three years.

Seeing old friends recently I joked, dry-eyed, about the wonder and terror of the first seven days of Jewish mourning — the shiva — being like a sort of cocktail party in hell. The night before, at a lovely restaurant, apropos of nothing at all, I started weeping into my food and ran to escape the table. I could see myself there, some 40 months earlier, talking to her teacher about the strange pain keeping my daughter from class. In the early days, her hurt was so raw we could just barely keep hold of her in its tumult. Hana worried that she was so angry with God that God would be angry with her.
Season 4, Episode 7: ‘Tailgate Party’This “Succession” season’s premiere episode ended with Tom and Shiv lying together in bed, bitterly angry but still holding hands. Their weird romantic renaissance peaks with this week’s episode, which sees them sexting each other incessantly — and sees Tom confusingly gifting Shiv with a glass-encased scorpion, in an apparent reference to “the scorpion and the frog” parable. As always with “Succession,” the Roys arrive at this party with discrete agendas. It’s only after Shiv warns him that the Roy boys are making moves that Matsson mobilizes. His strutting GoJo band barges into the triplex right when Kendall is leading a moment of silence for Logan.
Nicole Kidman and her husband, Keith Urban, were among the first celebrities to arrive inside the Great Hall at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday for the Costume Institute benefit, honoring the designer Karl Lagerfeld. The couple was accompanied by Baz Luhrmann and his wife, Catherine Martin. For the cameras, Ms. Kidman, with her long, strawberry blond locks, in a swath of peachy fabric, seemed to float toward Mr. Luhrmann’s side, in front of a towering centerpiece featuring hundreds of one-liter plastic bottles sourced from a recycling plant. The light of many flash bulbs reflected off the bottles, lighting Mr. Luhrmann’s face as he fluffed Ms. Kidman’s train, gesturing with his hands, softly, toward her face. Ms. Kidman, who starred in Mr. Luhrmann’s films “Moulin Rouge!” and “Australia,” poked her chin up, meeting the director’s hand in midair.
That remains true in the case of Fox News and Dominion Voting Systems, which averted a trial with an 11th-hour deal Tuesday. Money aside, Fox had to acknowledge the court’s ruling that “certain claims about Dominion” that Fox perpetuated on-air were in fact false. The Neutral-to-Positive Winner: Dominion Voting SystemsFor more than two years, Dominion spent untold amounts of money building a defamation case against one of the most popular TV networks on the planet. Davida Brook, left, Justin Nelson, second from left, and Stephen Shackelford, attorneys for Dominion Voting Systems, exit the New Castle County Courthouse in Wilmington, Delaware, on Tuesday. But for a company that’s valued somewhere between $30 million and $80 million, it’s quite a deal.
ATLANTA — Vince Dooley, the football coach who carried himself like a professor and guided Georgia for a quarter-century of success that included the 1980 national championship, died Friday. “Our family is heartbroken by the death of Coach Dooley. He was one of a kind with an unmatched love for UGA!” current Georgia coach Kirby Smart wrote on Twitter. The field at Sanford Stadium was dedicated in his honor during the 2019 football season. At Georgia, Dooley coached a plethora of standout players — from Bill Stanfill to Scott Woerner to Rodney Hampton.
